SciMed Research provides a facility and an opportunity for family physicians and specialists who have an interest in clinical research and clinical trials to conduct research as co-investigators without interfering with their medical practices. This arrangement gives SciMed access to a large database of subjects in multiple therapeutic areas as potential participants in SciMed’s clinical trials. As a result of SciMed’s referral relationship with the area’s physicians, SciMed has access to a large and captive population with a high percentage of seniors. Many participants appreciate volunteering for studies for what they can learn about their condition and for what the study may do to help others. SciMed has sub investigators, sub coordinators and clerical staff to ensure that all studies are recorded accurately and in a timely manner. SciMed can use a central industrial review board. SciMed staff are experienced in electronic data capture and transmission. SciMed offers the following facilities:
- private rooms for interviews and physical examinations.
- desk and computer access for CRAs.
- locked medication room, monitored temperature.
- -50 degree C freezer.
- centrifuge.
- spirometer and 12 lead EKG.
- adjacent to a lab and full service radiological facility.
- high speed wireless internet.
SciMed is a specialized research centre on the ground floor in a central professional building. Dr. Arkinstall and SciMed Research have a history of:
- meeting or exceeding recruitment goals.
- an extremely low drop-out rate.
- many repeat research volunteers.
Dr. Arkinstall has conducted clinical research during his 34 years in clinical practice at the Kelowna Allergy and Respiratory Health Clinic. He is a consultant to:
- the medical and pharmaceutical industries, assisting in the development of new products and reviewing trial protocols.
- Health Canada’s Drug and Products branch.

Current Clinical Trials
Why is this research important
The primary purpose of this research is to determine the effectiveness of the new therapy. However, at each level careful attention is paid to safety and the identification of potentially adverse side effects. SciMed Research has the expertise to evaluate new therapies for most medical diseases and conditions.
How does the clinical trial process work?
Each new therapy is subjected to a series of trials. The Phase I trial is completed with a small number of healthy volunteers to ensure the drug is safe. Phase II to IV trials are carried out with a large number of volunteers, generally in multiple countries.
